GD 2: Junior Review
A classic project in the Visual Communication Design major is the Junior Review Poster. Junior Review is a critical review process where the entire faculty gets together with student individually to critique their portfolios and determine whether or not they receive the Bachelor Arts which has students completing their senior year with a few more classes, or the Bachelor in Fine Arts where...

Spring Break
I’ve been using my spring break this year to do all of the detailing work on project that I’ve gotten back.  Friday I completed my revisions to my Stephen Colbert book (from GD1) and sent it off to print the final version.  I started yesterday redoing two of my page layouts from Exercise 1 (GD1 again) from last semester.  Then today, I finished my Alfa Romeo Short Term Identity project...

USG - FlashFest logo (draft 1)
I’m working on a logo design for FlashFest, which is the annual end of the semester event on campus that is free to students. It is noted for having a major act (or a few soemtimes) come to campus and perform outdoors on stage (indoors if it rains). I came up with a couple of ideas.  This one being the most recent.  I had to have a comp yesterday, so this is the first draft. I was not given...

Student Panel
Today I spoke to the freshman class as part of a panel of VCD majors.  I have done it once before, but this time there was about 40 people in the class that we were speaking to. So though daunting, I think I did good. Professor Shawn Simmons asked me to come in with a few other extremely talented students to speak about some of our individual projects that we have in our portfolio, respective year...

Goal #1
This is entry number 1 in my on going series of things I want to accomplish.  They will likely be design related somehow. At Cary-Grove High School in Cary, IL I was introduced to Auto CAD on a sparkling new Power Mac G3. My teacher for the class, Mr. Norton was a craftsman and an architect if I remember correctly. He taught the class that introduced me to the concept of using computer aided...

The Final Day With My Car
Since March 2001 I have owned the same black 1989 Buick Regal Custom. It started off looking exactly what you’d think a single owner Buick from 1989 would look like: After a lot of work (and convincing my dad to help me) at the ripe age of 17 I had turned it into this: Learning to paint the car, how to wax and care for a car, as well as how to fix the various amounts of things that...

GD 2: Talkin' Shop: A Trip To Carol and John's...
I have finished my 6 week project for GD 2.  We were given the task of telling a story about a trip we took, giving a personal account of the experience. I choose to go to Carol and John’s Comic Shop in Cleveland, OH on the west-side in Kamm’s Plaza. I have been going there for nearly 15 years on and off. I had always had an interest in comics, but it wasn’t until the mid 1990s...

Illustration 2 - Mount Trashmore
We got a project recently to do a collage in like manner of another illustrator (the list was provided).  I am not a huge fan of collage, but I figured that I’ll do something in the likeness of Robert Ryan (check his stuff out here).  My final version doesn’t resemble the stuff I was doing (which was closer to what he does with a single sheet) in the first couple of critiques on this...

GD 2: A Trip - In Progress...
In GD 2 we are about to wrap up the 6 week project about a trip that we have went on. I decided to go to Carol and John’s Comic Book Shop located in Kamm’s Plaza on the west-side of Cleveland. I have been going there for 14 years now (though not consecutive, I’ve moved a few times, but I always go back when I am in town) and since I have developed a personal relationship with the...

Advocacy Poster - E-Waste
For Exercise 2 in GD2 this semester we were told about the Massive Change book where designers try to tackle environmental issues. I decided to take on the issue of E-Waste (short for electronic waste.  obviously named during the “e before words means technology” phase).  After doing a lot of research, I was a bit appalled to learn that 80% of e-waste goes unrecycled in the US. Over...
