I just ordered my Apple Magic Mouse. I’ve just about had it with my current wired Mighty Mouse lately. I was excited about the Mighty Mouse because it was Apple’s first attempt at doing the two click and scroll mouse. To be honest… it worked great. For awhile. Then the little trackball would have the same problem that all mice in the 90s have… gunk. It’d get filled up on the mechanical rollers on the inside and starts to not read correctly. The problem was though.. that on the Mighty Mouse.. there was no way to take it apart and clean it. Instead you had to rub it upside down like an idiot hoping to clear it off (which has a 70% success ratio in my opinion).
But that brings us to today. The Magic Mouse was released (5 to 7 days for shipping) and now gives desktop users a futuristic looking laser based mouse that has a top shell that provides touch based gestures. No more track ball, no more visable buttons. This wireless mouse is a brilliant piece of design and takes away the one thing that laptop users have over the desktop users: Touch interface.
It isn’t perfect, and the future will likely bring even more high tech touch based interfaces (using a touch screen on a desktop is unrealistic… try holding your arm out for more than 12 minutes). But for right now, this is the absolute unification for the Mac. Now all computers have touch gestures (leaving out pinch and zoom… that is a bit disappointing) to help unify their product line and OS. Now… of course… Adobe CS5 better include these gestures or the ability to set them up yourself. Feature creep is setting in, let the interface grow a bit Adobe and start integrating with the Mac closer!
