USG - Voting Stuff
I’ve been working on some stuff for the Undergraduate Student Government’s efforts to get as many people registered to vote before the deadline on October 6th. It is difficult to market voting when you think about it. College students are either completely interested, or have so little interest that its a pathetic act of rebellion/general apathy that constitutes caring that little. I have my own opinion on politics (and I’m not planning on using this as a springboard to launch my political opinions, don’t worry) and I don’t think that forcing opinions on anyone is going to win any grounds either. USG is helping students this year by providing ways to get registered to vote, vote early and help students who might not vote realize that they can send in an Absentee Ballot starting next week until the the 3rd of October. I’m not really sure why the 3rd, I’d think they’d at least offer it on Monday the 6th as well. Then again, I’m one of their designers, not a student senator.
Regardless though, I was handed the task earlier this week of creating the posters announcing the services they were providing to students in the form of flyers and some posters. I quickly surveyed the current political information that was out there on campus already. It was either blindingly horrid, so incredibly red, white and blue that it was hard to read, or “hip” like Rock The Vote stuff (and by hip I mean: stealing their design themes from Rock Band). So I decided to go a different direction and keep it simple.

Instead of going crazy and posting pictures of the candidates on it I decided to make it more about what you need to do to be able to vote, while calling attention to the more important facts. Sometimes I think the most direct route is the more appealing and most helpful. The first poster I decided to make more about the date that is important for the election, and then having the information along with it explain what USG is offering to help with the election. Then the second poster I felt that “at Kent State” was the important factor in this, letting people know that this information is available on campus and that they don’t have to travel far to get any of it. The unfortunate factor was that there wasn’t a lot of time to create anything with extreme detail like I would have preferred, but getting these made is a time sensitive matter so I had to work with the time I had. Just wanted to post these before the information is out of date on them.
