Fruit/Veggie Spot
I know some of you seemed to get a kick out of the Zombie Kiwi from the other day and have been asking me about the project that I am doing it for. Its called the “Fruit Spot” (or vegetables… produce really). Our goal is to make a 6”x6” frame of reference and illustrate various fruits in chromatic greys, muted colors, and then a combination of those and prime colors as the final. The idea is that it would be used as a part of a article that it would go with in a magazine or newspaper, or something that would require a illustration to accompany it. The kiwi, which I’m still working on, was my chromatic grey, the pineapple is my muted colors and the tomato which I just finished today in my combination.
The pineapple idea comes a little from the fact I knew nothing about pineapples previously to this project other than the fact I do not like them on pizza. In the process of doing some research on the internet, I learned that some people actually do not know how to dice their own and found quite a few places devoting time to how to do so. Which of course, made me think of the game that I have been playing recently called Cooking Mama for the Nintendo Wii, in which you prepare reciepies that are broken up into stages simulating the cooking process. So I took that kind of step by step idea, and combined it into my own little diagraming skill to make this illustration a how-to.
The tomato on the other hand is actually a project built from necessity. Here in Ohio we are being completely covered in one of the worst snow storms to hit this area in awhile. Starting Friday at around 10am, it still has not stopped yet (its Saturday night) and we’re covered in nearly 14 to 15 inches of snow with no end in site. All the while, my car battery is dead, and today I discovered I am out of watercolor paper minus the scraps left over from other projects. So using just that, I actually took pieces and painted them with the woodgrain and taped them together to make my 6x6 live area giving it a table top appearance. The tomatoes themselves are beefcake, cherry, brandywine, heirloom, and plum (clockwise from top left), which of course I had no idea there were any differences. and decided to make it a “picked from the garden” type look now that I had this woodgrain/tabletop thing going on.
So, though it wasn’t my original idea, I think it worked out rather well! Sometimes its more fun to discover something unexpected or a problem of some sort and be able to make work for you. Its actually one of the more rewarding parts of this major if you ask me. I’ll post the kiwi later. Till then!

Here is the second version of the Kiwi Monster. That was an awkward day in class, I showed up with this, while everyone else had these still life type things going on. Weird. I’ve refined it since then though, toned it down a little and made the monster part a little more secret instead of in your face. I’m still having fun though, so I guess thats what matters. I had never known before, but Kiwi is specifically called “Kiwifruit” and it was named after the animal and called a fruit even though its argued that it is actually a mellon. They also have a bajillion other names including Chinese Gooseberry (for having a Gooseberry flavor and being native to China) and Hairy Bush Fruit among other things. So thats why its on a map of China.
